Herman Louis Kretschmer was born on April 22, 1879, in Chicago, Illinois, where he
would spend most of his life.

He graduated from the Northwestern University School of Pharmacy in 1900 and magna
cum laude from Northwestern University Medical School in 1904. Kretschmer completed
his internship at Alexian Brothers Hospital.
