The authors describe availability of lactation information on urology residency websites.
Not unsurprisingly, these details were hard to come by. As a surgical subspecialty
dominated by men, urology can be an extraordinarily difficult environment for the
pregnant or lactating trainee. In a recent survey of largely surgical residents, 73%
of childbearing respondents reported residency limited their ability to lactate, and
56% reported difficulties with breastfeeding during residency impacted their mental
health. Only 21% reported access to usable lactation rooms.
1
Women surgeons are more likely to delay childbearing, more likely to use assisted
reproductive technology, and more likely to suffer complications of pregnancy and
childbirth than the female partners of their colleagues.
