We thank Dr. Washington for his thoughtful editorial commentary about our article.
He raises several important issues. Most importantly, we would like to reinforce his
call to action – urology, and medicine in general, must move past simply reporting
the disparities that exist between diverse patient groups and work towards ameliorating
the system that perpetuates structural racism within our healthcare system. However,
if researchers contributing to this literature have not yet reached the level of naming
the problem by calling out racism, we believe that the creation and implementation
of appropriately targeted interventions is a lofty goal. So while we acknowledge that
naming the problem is only the first step, it remains essential. As a medical community,
through journals, peer-review and scientific meetings, we have a responsibility to
promote higher level analyses and to illuminate the current state of scientific blindness
regarding the known health implications of structural racism. We hope that our paper,
and further, the collection of research within this special issue, continue to work
towards more sustainable and equitable outcomes for Black and other non-White patients.
