      As general surgery and surgical subspecialties have recognized and worked toward intentional diversification of their workforce, urology has been slow to respond in kind.

      The 2019 AUA census reports only 2% of practicing urologists identify as Black, whereas 11.7% and 84.7% identify as Asian and White, respectively.

      Similarly, the 2019 Urologist in Training census reports only 3.1% of trainees identify as Black, 21.4% and 67.5% are considered Asian and White, respectively.

      With approximately 13% of the United States population identifying as Black or African American,

      the field of urology has a defined racial demographic endpoint to meet the goal of racial congruence between the country and the field. As efforts are made toward this goal, it is paramount the Black urology applicant is mentored and sponsored throughout their applicant journey and beyond. While the Black applicant's experience will largely mirror the experiences of their peers, it can simultaneously be distinctly different. We present our firsthand perspective as Black applicants in the field of urology.
