SIU Scholarship: Dr. Oranusi Chidi Kingsley
Article Outline
The Société Internationale d'Urologie offers Training Scholarships for young doctors with basic surgical or urological qualifications. The SIU Scholarships involve training in a recognized Urological center of excellence located in the candidate's geographical region. These SIU-accredited centers provide an excellent environment for learning and, in many instances, hands-on experience, so that candidates may acquire knowledge and skills that they will be able to transfer to their own setting of practice. In this series of short communications, SIU Scholars write about the impact that these training opportunities facilitated by the SIU had on their quality of care and career development. Information about applying for an SIU Scholarship is available at http://www.siu-urology.org/.
I wish to start by thanking the Société Internationale d'Urologie (SIU) for the opportunity they gave me through this training program to enrich my knowledge of Urology and patient care as a whole. I am very grateful to the SIU. I am also very grateful to Professor Hassan Abol-Enein, the director of the centre and chairman of the SIU scholarship programme for giving me the opportunity to come to his centre. When I arrived at Mansoura in July, I was particularly surprised by the high volume as well as the wide variety of cases seen at the centre. While in my centre in Nigeria I saw 4-5 cases of bladder tumour per year, here in Mansoura there was one radical cystectomy for bladder tumour every day. This means that in one week I saw cases of bladder tumour that I would otherwise have seen in one year in my centre. I was also able to see different forms of urinary diversion after radical cystectomy. With this, I was able to improve my surgical skills as well as see it done by the ‘masters’ themselves.
During the period of my stay I saw many patients with urinary stone disease that were treated with all forms of endoscopic procedures. I was also able to acquire the skills of PCNL, ureteroscopic procedures for stone extraction and stricture treatment. I was also able to improve my knowledge in some other oncological operations, such as radical prostatectomy and radical nephrectomy, adrenalectomy as well as kidney transplantation and urinary incontinence. I was also able to review some technical details in the treatment of Pediatric Urology cases such as hypospadias. I think that I have gained a lot in my main areas of interest: oncology and endourology.
I was also able to perform hands-on laparoscopic nephrectomy in animals. This was indeed a great opportunity for me and has opened a new area of interest for me. I am also very grateful to the staff of the animal laboratory. They were all very friendly and supportive throughout my stay.
During my training period I had the opportunity to take part in two Oncology courses organised at the centre. These courses gave me the opportunity to organise the theoretical and practical aspects of all that I had learnt during my stay. I also had the opportunity to practise the various types of urinary diversion in the animal laboratory during the course.
Finally I would like to thank all the other Professors in the department of Urology and especially Professor El-Housseiny El-Zalouey, the Chief of Urology and the senior staff members in the department for all their efforts in making my stay worthwhile. The residents were also very cooperative. I thank them all. Once more I thank Professor Hassan Abol-Enein for all the assistance he gave me, especially during the early period of my stay when adjusting to my new environment was difficult. This he was able to perform and indeed for every other visitor to the centre, despite his busy schedule as the director of the centre.
I would like to recommend that a more detailed training structure be put in place in the centre to allow visitors opportunities to take part in surgical procedures at least under supervision. The current structure does not allow for active participation.
