Dear Colleagues:

As we move into a new publishing year for The Gold Journal, I am excited to report that UROLOGY has had yet another great year. I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about the exciting new changes at Elsevier Science Inc. and The Gold Journal.

Our publisher, Elsevier Science Inc., has made a few changes; most importantly, we have a new Publisher, Kathleen Gaffney. During the company’s reorganization last April, Ms. Gaffney transitioned within Elsevier to replace our previous Publisher, Glen Campbell, who is now Vice President for Elsevier’s Continuity Publishing program. Under Ms. Gaffney’s guidance, we are planning a new and exciting evolution for The Gold Journal. In addition, Reed Elsevier acquired Harcourt Health Science and all of Harcourt’s publishing business last year. This integration further strengthens the global reach of Elsevier and should provide increased educational value to our readers. This joining of publishing houses has allowed Elsevier and UROLOGY to be joined by several premier Urology textbooks such as Campbell’s Urology, Atlas of Urologic Surgery (Hinman), and Pediatric Urology (Gearhart).

A journal’s impact factor depicts the volume of citations to important published papers within a given time period. In recent years, UROLOGY’s impact factor has improved dramatically thanks to the support of the many important authors, readers, and the Editorial staff who have been so influential in this process. In 2000, UROLOGY ranked 8 out of 43 journals in the Urology and Nephrology group with an impact factor of 2.489. I am delighted to announce that UROLOGY’s impact factor for 2001 has risen to 2.762. This represents the largest single yearly impact factor rise in over five years for this journal and highlights the many important papers that were submitted and published in The Gold Journal in the past two years. UROLOGY now ranks seventh in its group.

This month’s issue of UROLOGY highlights a panel of editorials focused on the issue of “Informed Consent for PSA Testing.” This important question, initially raised as an idea for an editorial by Dr. Gerald Chodak, is thoughtfully addressed by several experts in the field of PSA and early detection for prostate cancer. I hope that you enjoy this debate and find the comments useful in your practice.

Many thanks to those of you who have donated your time in the past and those who will do so in the future to serve as expert reviewers for UROLOGY. We anticipate going online for reviews, manuscript submissions, and editing in the second quarter of 2003; stayed tuned. We appreciate your patience during this transition.

All of us on the Editorial Board are especially thankful to our publishing company, Elsevier Science Inc., and the many wonderful staff members (Kathleen Gaffney, Publisher; Margaret Pavin, Production Editor; Craig Smith, Senior Editor, Supplements; Brian Jenkins, Senior Production Editor, Supplements; Mickey Kramer, Senior Production Editor, Supplements; Mary Crowell, Senior Production and Proof Editor, Supplements; and Elise Stone, Editorial Assistant, Supplements) and our Editorial Office staff (Paula Partin, Managing Editor and Judy Borozzi, Editorial Assistant) for their hard work this past year in making The Gold Journal truly the Premier Journal in Urology. I look forward to the year 2003 with continued excitement for UROLOGY.

Sincerely yours,
